DJ The Griot and Griot Soul Films
It was the late 2000s and I had written a feature length screenplay that I thought I could actually produce. I wanted to make many films, I had so many ideas. Still do. I knew if I was going to do it, I needed to have a film company. Since I wanted it to be a community-based project, I decided on a nonprofit film company. I needed a name. I was walking outside my Mom's house with my little Sister Daleena and talking about the fact that I wanted to dedicate the name to our Father who had transitioned to another realm. I started going on and on about how he was as a person, how he would share the stories of the community over and over, rarely changing a word. I said, "He had such a Griot Soul." She said, "That's what you should name your company!" We looked at each other and I'm sure any passerby could see the huge lightbulb that was glowing above our heads. She was right! That was it! And since then, that is the moniker under which I produced that feature film (trailer below) She Wasn't Last Night and have written dozens of scripts (short and long) since. I hope you enjoy the trailer of my first feature - which I was able to bring my entire family and dozens of community member together to make. And I hope you'll get to see my 2nd feature in the next few years as well.
